円の中心・直径を英語で何と言うでしょうか？

英語ツウそうなんだ。だったら、diameterの接頭辞の“dia”に注目するといいよ。
“dia”意味：
「〜を通して（through）」
「横切って（across）」
「完全に（completely）」

dia（横切って）+ meter（測る）＝「通って測る」
英語ツウ「横切る」というニュアンスから「完全性」のニュアンスを受け取れるかな？「半径」だと不完全。横切る「直径」は完全な線というイメージ。
はるかそう考えると、diagonalという難しい単語も「対角線」という意味が理解できるわね。

dia（横切る）+ gon（角）＋al＝「角を通る線」
また、diagonalは「対角線」という名詞だけでなく、「斜めの、対角の」という形容詞の意味もあります。

英語ツウちなみに、馴染みのある単語“dialogue”（対話）の“dia”は、「通して」の意味になるよ。

はるかよく「ログを残す」っていうけど、この“logue”が語源だったのね。
英語ツウいや、違うよ。
「ログを残す」の「ログ」は、「log＝記録」の意味であって、「dialogue（ダイアログ）」の 「-logue」 とは語源も意味も違うよ。紛らわしいけど別物なんだ！

英語ツウそうだよ。
squared paper（方眼紙）という言葉がある通り、もともとは「角ばった」という意味だけど、数や単位を2乗するという意味にもなるよ。
